Une meilleur connaissance des animaux que nous observons aide sans aucun doute à leur protection mais aussi à la compréhension du milieu dans lequel ils vivent et qu’ils partagent avec d’autre espèces comme l’homo sapiens, cette dernière présentant aussi un certain intérêt ! Cette logique, associée à diverses demandes de collaboration dans le domaine de la photo identification à motivé la création de cette banque de photo. Il ne s’agit pas ici d’un nouveau catalogue, mais bien plus d’un simple outil ouvert à tous, curieux, whalewatcher, étudiants, groupe de recherche… ou il est possible non seulement de déposer des photos mais aussi de les charger pour les utiliser dans le cadre d’étude lié á la photo identification et même de les inclurent dans des catalogues déja existant. La référence en ce domaine étant le catalogue crée par IFAW, le Dr Jonathan Gordon et Dra Lisa Steiner aux Açores en 1987.
